Energy‑Efficient Passivhaus Upgrade and Extension Beside Ancient Woodland
This East Sussex architectural project sits on the edge of ancient woodland — a setting that offered both a remarkable natural asset and a unique design challenge. The sensitive location inspired a scheme focused on exceptional energy efficiency, sustainability, and a deep connection to the surrounding landscape.

The clients’ ambition for a highly sustainable home led to a full refurbishment and extension. The existing structure was retrofitted to Passivhaus standards, delivering outstanding thermal performance and dramatically reduced energy consumption. The new two-storey extension was built using a Structural Insulated Panel System (SIPS), chosen for its superior insulation, airtightness, and environmental benefits. To further minimise reliance on fossil fuels, the design incorporates solar panels, battery storage, and an air source heat pump.

A dated conservatory was replaced with a beautifully crafted extension that opens the home to nature, framing views of the woodland and gardens. As the site lies within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the design required a sympathetic architectural approach to secure planning approval while maximising the stunning outlook.

High‑quality materials were used throughout the interior and exterior, including a striking new kitchen. The basement level has been transformed to include a library, media room, and a self‑contained studio apartment, offering flexible living. On the top floor, each bedroom now benefits from its own ensuite, enhancing comfort and privacy for the homeowners.
