AONB House Extension and Open‑Plan Reconfiguration with Energy‑Efficient Upgrades

This two‑storey, three‑bedroom home sits within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), presenting both an exciting opportunity and a sensitive design challenge. The clients approached us to explore the full potential of the property, including alternative extension designs to improve the layout of the reception spaces and increase the number of bedrooms.

As part of the concept development, we produced a range of external finish options, offering both traditional and contemporary treatments to help the clients visualise how different architectural styles could enhance the character of the home.

Internally, the existing layout was reconfigured to create an open‑plan ground floor, combining the kitchen, dining and living areas into one light‑filled, flexible space. Large sliding doors were introduced to maximise natural light and provide a seamless connection between the interior and the terrace, strengthening the relationship with the surrounding landscape.

Energy performance and sustainability were key priorities. The clients wished to insulate and re‑clad the building to significantly improve thermal efficiency. The design also incorporated solar panels and battery storage, enabling the home to become more energy‑efficient and increasingly self‑sufficient.

This project demonstrates how thoughtful architectural design can transform an existing property, enhancing both its functionality and environmental performance while respecting its AONB setting.
